I saw this on Current TV’s countdown for the greatest viral videos and I was astounded at how similar it was to a part of my own project which basically involved me taking a photograph of the bus stop across the street which is the first thing I see every morning as I come out of my gate and leave for school. I was also fortunate enough to begin to take these while there was construction going on there so I was able to more or less document its transformation from crappy bus stop to slightly less crappy bus stop. The difference between Noah’s images and mine is that his camera points at himself, the most obvious way to document yourself, whereas my camera was pointed at the things around me, which I think is a slightly less obvious way to go about it.

Extract from The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster

New York was an inexhaustible space, a labyrinth of endless steps, and no matter how far he walked, no matter how well he TBC

Rachel Whiteread

Rachel Whiteread

Tony Cragg

Tony Cragg

British-born Eadweard Muybridge, who emigrated to the United...

British-born Eadweard Muybridge, who emigrated to the United States in the 1850s, is one of the most influential photographers of all time. He pushed the limits of the camera’s possibilities, creating world-famous images of animals and humans in motion. Just as impressive are his vast panoramas of American landscapes, such as the Yosemite valley, and his documentation of the rapidly growing nation, particularly in San Francisco. His dramatic life included extensive travels in North and Central America, a career as a successful lecturer, and the scandal of his trial for the murder of his wife’s lover.
I like this image because of the way the person is out of focus, but their surroundings are in sharp focus. In terms of my investigation it is an interesting image because it is as if there is greater importance given to the background. It could be interpreted as meaning that it is the environment that makes up the person, a statement which fits in well with my psycho-geographical approach. I therefore resolve to take a number of images in this style.

tallisphoto:

I thought also of how this could be a theme for the presentation of my final piece in the sense that I have been documenting and taking pictures of the mundane, the ordinary, yet through giving them that attention and a certain elevated status in the world by forcing the viewer, who would normally ignore them, to look intently at it and contemplate why I have chosen to do so, I’m hoping it might dawn on them that I am taking the images not so much for them, but for the future them. to save that which might be lost forever, the mundane and overlooked, by revealing their beauty, so that those who come after may know that they were. The things that make history what it is, the things archeologists are interested in are not the memorable things, we have enough of those. it’s the little things… the things historians speculate like how did the aztecs walk from place to place? what did they take with them and why? In the same way, my “exhibition” will feature the things that may shed light to, perhaps a future historian when they wonder, what surrounded the average 21st century Londoner? what was London like, really like, not big ben and the eye, but the streets and back alleys… what signs did they use. however the seeming informativeness of my images is misleading because they may hide just as much as they give away, such as what do they mean? Hence, “this is not a secret code”. It both isn’t and is.

Sean Scully

A lot of his ideas are quite philosophical as, especially in the character of Quinn, he plays around with the idea of one holding a number of identities and the effects of that. But what is most interesting and relevant are the seemingly random wanderings of Peter Stillman [Snr] who treks the streets of New York everyday, Quin Later discovers, creating letters and words in the routes he takes. He also collects found objects which he places in a bag, and I found it a little funny that someone observing me when taking photos might consider me to be a Peter Stillman type, taking images of “rubbish” and wandering off the well beaten path.

This is a left-wing graphic magazine called Chimurenga, based in...

This is a left-wing graphic magazine called Chimurenga, based in South Africa, and again, does not relate directly to my work except in terms of presentation. This particular volume, like my own sketchbook, is mostly handwritten. I think this kind of presentation works well because it add’s the Personal to Personal Investigation. A graphologist would agree when I say that handwriting say’s a lot about a person, perhaps more than they even realise and this is the same thing I am investigating in my images. Perhaps our environment reveals more about society, ourselves than we realise.
